When you take out a pet insurance policy it's worthwhile checking if you're covered for theft, especially if you own a dog.
When you take out a pet insurance policy it's worthwhile checking if you're covered for theft, especially if you own a dog.

Pedigree dogs can be worth thousands of pounds and are seen by many thieves as an easy target. There has been a rise in pet theft in the UK in recent years, and pets can be stolen from a number of places including;

"    Outside shops

"    From cars

"    Parks and woodland

There are a few things you can do to help get your pet back if it is stolen.

"    Microchip/tattoo

Getting your dog micro chipped or tattooed is one way you can make it easier to get your best friend back and avoid making a claim on your pet insurance.

These options don't provide proof of ownership, but they will make your dog more easily identifiable when you're making people aware of your search.

Some pet insurance policies will even cover your expenses for advertising the fact your dog is missing and putting up a financial reward.

"    Keep any documentation you have

When you buy your pet from a breeder or other owner, it's always advisable to get a receipt and some sort of proof of ownership.

Even if it's just a simple letter saying that you've paid a certain sum for the dog which lists the previous owners name and address and yours, at least you'll have something you can show if you need to.

Unlike car ownership, there are no legal documents you need to keep for a pet, but they could help get your dog back if there's a dispute about ownership.

You should also make sure you have your pet insurance documents as this will have details about your dog that could help.

"    Make sure you have photos and vet receipts

Having photos of your dog you can put up on 'missing' posters and online is useful, as is keeping any vet receipts you might have accumulated over the years.

If your dog has been stolen and your efforts to get him//her back are fruitless, your pet insurance may pay up to a certain limit to cover your costs.
