Until the mid-1970's many people were exposed to asbestos. People who worked within the construction and labouring sectors are most likely to have been exposed, particularly the following occupations: Bricklayers, carpenters, dockers, drywallers, engineers, electricians, welders, insulators, labourers, mechanics, pipefitters, plasterers, plumbers and ship workers.

There are other ways in which you could have been affected by asbestos. Uncontrolled explosions and buildings collapsing have been shown to quickly effect people caught within dust clouds filled with asbestos. There have been cases of people caught in the dust cloud, following the collapse of the world trade centre on 9/11, having shown symptoms of asbestos exposure diseases - years, even decades, before symptoms of asbestos diseases normally present themselves due to the vast quantities of asbestos potentially being inhaled. Whilst these events are rare, they are shown to be some of the most devastating in terms of asbestos exposure.
Another way people can be susceptible to asbestos exposure is through DIY. It is generally best to leave asbestos undisturbed if possible, as asbestos is normally safe if it remains undisturbed. There are some simple ways to prevent asbestos exposure in this way: First, always wear a face mask when removing, drilling or altering walls; secondly, ensure that all areas are clean (i.e. vacuumed, dusted) following DIY - preventing asbestos recirculating into your surroundings; and finally, if conducting major structural works or if the property contains sprayed asbestos, or has lagging or insulating boards, particularly on older properties, an asbestos inspection is a wise investment, as is using a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
