If you find that when you enter a room a cat has been in you experience an allergic reaction you may be suffering from a cat allergy. The symptoms of cat allergy are the same as pretty much any other allergy. They include a runny nose, watery eyes, itching eyes, nasal congestion, a sore throat, coughing, itchy skin and in extreme cases difficulty breathing and swelling of the hands or feet.

Of all the pet allergies people suffer from cat allergy is the most common. This is because cats produce 5 sources of allergens, which are elements many people have an allergic reaction to. These allergens are Fel d 1, Fel d 4, Fel d 2, Fel d 3 and cat IgA. Some of these allergens are present in the cat’s fur and others in their skin.

What You Can Do To Reduce the Impact of Your Cat Allergy

Many people who suffer from cat allergies do not find that it affects their life much. They simply avoid contact with cats whenever possible, but a few people discover that they have a cat allergy only once they become a cat owner themselves. Not all of those owners want to give up their new pet, so develop ways of managing their allergy.

Things like regular dusting and hovering keeps the presence of cat fur and cat skin cells in the air to an absolute minimum. Making sure that your cat does not sit on the chair you use also helps. If you do pet your cat washing your hands immediately afterwards works well as does bathing your cat regularly, but good luck with that last idea.

You can also treat your cat allergy symptoms with over the counter drugs, but before going down that path should get a cat allergy test done.

Using a Home Cat Allergy Testing Kit

You can find cat allergy testing kits for home use on the internet. To use them all you have to do is to prick your finger and place a drop of blood onto a slide and read the result.
