Most people know that an ecologist is someone who specialises in the environment. The dictionary definition is a biologist who studies the relationships between living organisms.
Most people know that an ecologist is someone who specialises in the environment. The dictionary definition is a biologist who studies the relationships between living organisms.
Which is really interesting, but most people cannot even begin to imagine a situation which would lead them to hire an ecologist and to a certain extent they are right. Very few of life's little challenges would involve the man in the street hiring an ecologist. But that said there are a few situations where it may be necessary. This is because the role of ecologists is no longer confined to just studying the interdependency between living things in the interests of science. Their services are being called upon more and more frequently to assess a situation rather than study it from a scientific point of view.
Situations Where You May Need an Ecologist
If you have a house and would like to build an extension you know that in most situations you need planning permission. In 99% of cases it is a simple matter of getting plans drawn up and submitted to the council for their approval. At this stage, in normal circumstances, it is an architect you would need to use. However, if building your extension involves the removal of certain kinds of trees you will also need the services of an ecologist.
The same is true if your building plan involves disturbing the habitat of a protected species, such as bats, badgers, certain kinds of newts and many other animals. In addition there is a fairly long list of plants that you cannot simply uproot to make way for your building project.
Finding a Qualified Ecologist
If you need the help of an ecologist it is very important that you hire one that is qualified to assess your particular situation. Do an initial search online and look for ecologists who are highly rated by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Read through their website carefully and speak over the phone. It is wise to compare the services of at least 2 ecologists before hiring one.
