Today’s children like to have a say in the way in which their bedrooms are decorated and furnished, and many retailers are aware that they can appeal to parents through their children. This has created a range of furniture that is durable, functional and colourful. This furniture is on a lot of occasions not designed to have a long lifeline as the whims and fancies of children need to be catered for. Also as children grow up the type of furniture the y wished to have in their room’s changes. A wardrobe, which was covered in a Winnie the Pooh design, was suitable for a child of 7 but once that child reaches 11 or 12, then the item has served its purpose.

Bookcases.

Bookcases are an important part of a child’s bedroom furniture, as they will hold items of educational value. Encouraging a child to read is a prime part of their development and thus every effort should be made to stimulate their interest. The design of bookcases, the positioning of them and the functionality will all add up to how your child sees this item of furniture and the way in which they will appreciate it.

In a bid to encourage the child to feel a part of the decision making process it may be good to consider a flat pack approach to what you are intending to buy, particularly if it is for a boy’s room. You can bring the flat pack furniture home and ask your son to help in the task of putting it together. This will help him to learn to be constructive and at the same time he will feel he has made a contribution to his own room. Maybe you will let him paint the bookcase before it is finally assembled.

By involving children in the selection of the bookcase for their bedroom you may well have stimulated their interest in reading that can only assist them in their educational development.
