The film and the theatre industry cannot exist without the support of the props industry, and whilst a number of film companies and stage companies will have their own people to create props, it is sometimes more convenient to hire these in.

There are prop manufacturers and designers who hold a stock of general props that can be hired on a weekly or monthly basis. These props are manufacture d to health and safety standards and are always from non-flammable materials.

Advantages of Hiring

The advantage of hiring props is that when producing films and theatre productions there are many props that are required of a specific nature, and time needs to be spent on their specialist production, so the props that can be hired in would allow for more time to be allocated to the more specialized items.

One other factor to be considered is that on a film set the props will be used just once and then discarded, so it is far more effective to hire than to create and then destroy.

As for theatre companies they will have repeat performances of the production, but the issue they have is one of storage. Many props are large and cumbersome and the cost of storage for these items is considerable, particularly if you are located in say London. To hire is a much more cost effective option.

It is also a possibility that in a stage performance a prop may malfunction or be damaged and the prop department of the stage company may not be able to respond to the demand for a replacement prop with sufficient speed. If you were on a hire contract then it would be incumbent on the hire company to replace the prop, so that the performances can continue.

The final issue to consider is that the film company may be making a series of films as in say Harry Potter, and whilst the props can be used across the whole series of films, they may require a certain adaptation for each film in the series. If the prop is hired it would also be possible to arrange for the adaptation to be made within the hire price.
