If not then it is most likely an alloy or a low carat item.  Gold alloy jewellery is often combined with a magnetic metal.  This means you can hold gold items against a magnetic so see if they attract each other.  If they do then most likely you have a lower carat gold alloy piece.  If you are careful you could try a more comprehensive nitric acid test.  Take your scrap gold and make a small and inconspicuous scratch in the metal.  Apply a little nitric acid to the scratch with a wooden tooth pick.  If there is no reaction then the item is pure gold.  However if the metal changes colour in contact with the acid then it is either an alloy or gold plate over a base metal.  Make sure you wear gloves and eye protection when using nitric acid.
