Life is temporary and transient. We are here for just a millionth of a millisecond in terms of the bigger picture. Yet, just because we might seem small in terms of the overall grand scope of the universe, the only thing that we really ever know anything about is ourselves.
Life is temporary and transient. We are here for just a millionth of a millisecond in terms of the bigger picture. Yet, just because we might seem small in terms of the overall grand scope of the universe, the only thing that we really ever know anything about is ourselves.

Such a solipsistic view may seem depressing, but in reality it simply goes to show why we all need love within our lives. Whether you are deeply religious or, like a growing number of people today, an atheist, and whether we have anything to look forward to on the other side or not, the one thing that will serve to focus us on this earth is love.

No matter how successful or rich or wealthy a person becomes, unless there is a single person that they can invest their emotions in, the majority of us would end up being miserable. The happiest people are those that have managed to have a happy marriage and have children, whether naturally or adopted. With love, no matter what happens to us, there is always a strong emotional core to pull us through.

This may all sound like so much sugary sweet, saccharine nonsense, but in reality, love will serve to make anything else worthwhile. Which is why marriage is not necessarily just something that is beneficial for religious reasons. Offering diamond rings and celebrating your love for someone in front of all your friends and family is not just about satisfying some religious criteria, but instead is as important for atheists as it is for devout Christians.

After all, atheists will often believe that everything we do is confined just to this earth and the finite time we have upon it. In many ways, marriage is therefore even more important as it is the acts that we carry out on earth, the here and now, that will be important as opposed to some lengthier notion of a hereafter. For many, this may again seem depressing, and should someone spend that finite time on earth alone, maybe it would be. However, the power of a truly loving bond will go far beyond diamond engagement rings and will serve to make that time on earth feel far more worthwhile.

However, love, marriage and those shiny diamonds aren’t just about trying to distract ourselves from our own mortality, even if it is indeed a very good tool for such things. Love also serves to inspire us – consider the best works of art in history, the best music and even, in some cases, the most impressive inventions. Love serves to make us want to create, to impress, to overwhelm. It makes us want to be the best people we can be, and therefore without love, we are almost certain to only achieve a certain amount of our potential.

Thinking of others above ourselves makes any of our own plights also seem far less important, therefore whether we are here for just a short time or whether our souls will live on in eternity, it will not matter. Instead, we will only want what is best for those we care about, stripping away any (very human) selfish intentions, and in turn becoming the best people we can be.
