One of the most annoying things about home printers is that they often cost a small fortune to run - ink is the single biggest expense when running printers and it's often difficult to find compatible HP cartridges at an affordable price.  There are a few solutions though.

Run your printer carefully - ensure that your settings are turned down to the absolute minimum for what you're using it for.  Most people don't need crisp, photo quality prints when they're printing documents to review before final edits, or printing colouring sheets for their children, so consider turning down the settings to get the most out of your HP cartridges.

Ensure that your printer runs a clean cycle once in a while - especially if you're not using it much.  It's critical to ensure that your printer runs clean, and while it might seem counterintuitive to run the printer to clean off ink, using more ink, ink blockages can break your print head and cost you more in the long run.  Cleaning your printer will also mean that if you've not ran it in a while you're not wasting ink - or time - printing that time critical document only to discover it needs to run several cleaning cycles.

Use the monitor provided with your HP printer - some people install other apps to monitor their ink, or rely on waiting till the print quality deteriorates - when in truth, if your print quality is poor, you can take the cartridge out and gently shake it - and then try once more.  You might find there's a little ink left, and that your monitoring service was wrong.  HP cartridges are monitored more accurately with a HP installed app, so if in doubt, run the one that comes with your printer.

Don't refill your cartridges yourself - another major mistake people make is refilling their cartridges themselves - this can damage your printer cartridge and leave you using sub-standard ink in your machine - or worse, a blended thickness of ink that may result in blotchy ink quality.  Taking it to a professional refiller or ordering refurbished or compatible inks online is often cheaper.
