The first firm in the UK to distribute Samsung
Telephone Systems was Securicor Telecoms Limited from their offices in
Middleton, Manchester. Most people associated them as cash in transit
specialist but in reality they were a group of companies that grew from that
security specialism. There was a vehicle converter called Bedwas who
specialised in converting vans into secure bullion wagons. They started in
communications because of the requirement to remain in contact with their
drivers. As a consequence they constructed a huge national radio network and
later became pioneers in the early car phones for the British market budged as
System 3.
When cellular, as we know it today, evolved they
were partnered with BT and owned 51% of Cell net which these days known as O2.
The organisation for fixed wire commas was begun to furnish member firms of the
conglomerate with internal phone systems and they were distributors of the
Rhapsody key systems manufactured by OKI. When the printer manufacturer chose
to focus on it’s core activities, a new arrangement was formed to import
Samsung Telephone Systems.
The Early DCS Samsung Telephone
Systems
There were two sizes at the 1994 European launch.
The Compact would accommodate 4 x ISDN2 lines and up to 42 extensions and the
full size variant could take up to 3 x ISDN30 pipes and 180 handsets. The
largest of the 2 Samsung Telephone Systems had it’s cards encapsulated within a
cassette type architecture. It was a couple of years before the Korean company
acquired the operation and turned it into the Europe HQ for Samsung Telephone
Systems.
The Inaugural VoIP Samsung
Telephone Systems
The iDCS100 Samsung Telephone Systems was the
earliest systems to add IP at the beginning of the millennium. It accepted a 30
channel ISDN circuit and up to 58 endpoints. Conversion to voice over internet
protocol was handled by a media gateway interface card to give a proprietary
networking capability.
Current Samsung Telephone Systems
These are branded Samsung OfficeServ and include
solutions for small sub a dozen terminal sites and up to 800 extension packages
for larger buildings. The newer Samsung Telephone Systems have no need for
converters as the kit is designed to work in IP but can supply TDM telephony
ports where needed. Many other brands offer this Pure-IP way of working but Samsung Telephone Systems are one of the few that
boasts connection for traditional handset, faxes, etc.
Samsung Telephone Systems New
Offices
The base in the North West still exists but is
presently just the stock warehouse for Europe and a technical support desk.
Headquarters are now in Chertsey along with that of Samsung Electronics. The
division concerned with Samsung Telephone Systems
is rebranded as Samsung Business and it also deals with TV set top boxes.
