There are so many events that require the usual little black dress or “LBD” for short, that it can get pretty mundane.

The office party, the holiday party, fancy dinner plans, date night, night out with the girls, ooorrrr...a funeral? ANYWAYS, the point is, you have a lot of opportunities to pull out old trusty from the closet. Now is the time to liven things up with...enter loud announcer guy...”The Top Five Little Black Dress Alternatives!”

1.The Little RED Dress. Okay okay, I know, red? Kinda risky. But for the right occasion it comes off impressive, confident, and sexy. By right occasion I mean any of the above situations except for the funeral. Unless it’s one of those “celebrate life” type ones, then go for it. The trick to the LRD (little red dress) are the following rules:
-Pick the right shade. Think darker classic 40’s red, not bright 80’s hooker red.
-Red attracts enough attention solo, so keep it simple and leave out sequins,
    glitter, shimmer, rhinestones, etc.
-Stay away from the clingy, stretchy, spandexy fabrics; it will only make it look     cheap. I like a pretty satin or flowing chiffon myself.

2.The Little NAVY Dress. Navy is the new black. Seriously, Reese Witherspoon said so and what she says goes. You can google her. She has been rocking the most amazingly fantastic navy dresses. The LND (are you catching on now?) looks choice with loose hair, navy and silver smokey eyes, and a pale pink lip. Wow. If you are looking to go edgy, pair your LND with black accessories, i.e. black shoes, nails, clutch, maybe even a headband.

3.The Little PURPLE Dress. The shade of purple which I am referring to is a dark purple, the color of an eggplant if you will. This particular shade has become very popular the past few years. It looks amazing on a warm skintoned brunette but also on very fair blondes and will show off a red head like no other. Pair the LPD with gold jewelry for a truly royal ensemble. And as for the style? I’m thinking ruffled or a little ruching does a body good.

4.The Little METALLIC Dress. Shiny and shimmery golds, silvers, bronzes, and gun metals are so hot right now. Find one that is adorned with grommets, spikes, and studs-even better. Because this style is hmmm...a bit flashy, make sure it is indeed “little”. You’re non reflective skin will act as a nice balance. Wear it with tousled hair a la Blake Lively, simple or no jewelry, and some tough girl shoes.

5.The Little BLACK Dress. Wait, black? I thought we were getting away from the monotony of black how did it slip back in? Well let’s be serious, black is forever more. We need black like we need air. So for your next LBD purchase, make sure it is something out of the norm for you. Here are a few suggestions:
-Go retro. Fine a 20’s flapper stunner or a belted 50’s tea length...or maybe a     sultry 40’s silhouette catches your eye.
-Look for texture. Lace, sheer cutouts, raised patterns, eyelets, etc. will add a     unique touch.
-Patterns. Subtle polka dots, pin strips, florals, and more can add so much     personality to an otherwise blah dress.
    -Bling. ‘Nough said.
