Energy
conservation reduces the energy consumption and energy demand per capita and
thus offsets some of the growth in energy supply needed to keep up with
population growth.
Also
by reducing emissions, energy conservation is an important part of lessening climate
change. Energy conservation facilitates the replacement of non-renewable
resources with renewable energy.
To make your contribution in energy saving
one should start from home. To become more energy efficient, you have to
identify major areas of electrical use. About 50 percent of energy consumption
goes to either heating or cooling, with lighting, appliances, and personal
electronics taking up the rest. It's often helpful to think of lowering usage
in one or more given "topical" areas to bring down monthly bills and
environmental pollution.
Start with a list of some of the standard
energy-saving products that you may be able to incorporate into your home
including programmable thermostats, solar batteries and solar lights.
You can replace incandescent light bulbs in
your garden or front door with compact solar lights.
Plug electronics that don't have to be on
constantly into a surge protector or Charge controller.
Turn the strip switch off when no items are being used. Computer modems,
charging cell phones and other electronics are constantly using electricity if
plugged in.
Install a programmable thermostat in your
home or business. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates a 10 percent savings
on a year's worth of heating and air conditioning bills if thermostat
temperatures are cut 10 to 15 percent for at least eight hours each day. Set
the temperature to automatically raise or lower at different times of the day,
or set it to come on a half hour before everyone comes home.
Install solar batteries
on your home. This transforms sunlight into electricity, reduces home electricity
bills and reduces electricity usage from power plants. Solar-powered outdoor
lighting will eliminate even more electricity use.
Applying energy saving improvements in your
home will not only make your home more comfortable, but can also deliver long-term
financial rewards. Permanently lower energy bills will more than make up for
the higher cost of installing energy efficient appliances and improvements.
